WHAT IS STREETDANCE

Streetdance is like an umbrella made up of 8 main styles including:

 

Old Skool Hip Hop: mainly came around in the 90's with moves named after lots of popular culture, famous people and brands.

House: A style that came about post disco era in the 80's mainly from the clubs and House music at the time made up of Jacking, Footwork and Lofting.

Nu Skool: Current and recent popular culture with inspiration from all styles.

Locking: Created by Don Camberlock which is a funk style moving with quick freezes and a comical edge.

Popping: Late 1970's out of the boogaloo cultural movement Quick pulses of the muscles also creating a robotic effect and has branches such as tutting and robotics.

Breaking: Created on streets of New York in 1970's with young people looking for new ways to battle it out without guns and violence; made up of 4 pillars Toprocks, Freezes, Power Moves and Floorwork also now an Olympic sport.

Waacking: Came around in the disco era 1970's quite feminine and associated with Vogueing and uses lots of arm movements and poses.

Krump: Evolved through African-American Streetdancing in the US early 2000's as a way of young people escaping gang life and was a way of expressing anger and strong emotions in a non harmful and violent way.
